每年在美国拉斯维加斯举行的世界扑克锦标赛WSOP（World Series of Poker）已经成为了一项全球瞩目的娱乐盛典。WSOP组织者正在计划在欧洲进行《World Series of Poker 2008》赛事，首先计划于2007年9月6日至16日在英国进行三场比赛。WSOP组委会委员Jeffrey Pollack表示“这是我们向全球扩张的第一步，我想在以后的一年到三年内，我们会看到WSOP的比赛在全世界范围内进行。”同时他暗示可能包括在埃及和南非的Harrah's赌场内进行比赛。WSOP于1970年开始举办，参赛选手已经从1978年的42人增加到去年的8773人。正在进行的2007 年WSOP比赛已经又刷新了多项参赛人数记录。
